Lynette approached the front desk, twisting her purse strap in her hands. She smiled at Walter politely, curiously noting the surprise that passed over his face the instant he saw her.
âIâm here to meet Linc for lunch, is he around?â she asked, watching as Walter dropped the scissors heâd been holding and grinned foolishly at her.
âYeah, sure. Um, let me go get him.â He started to bolt into the back office before he suddenly whipped around and pointed an index finger at her questioningly. âHas anyone ever told you that you look a lot like Rachel McAdams?â
Lynette blinked, caught off guard by the question. âNo.â
âIf she had red hair, I swear she could be your twin.â
âThatâs nice, I guess.â Lynette frowned, getting impatient with him. âCan you get Linc, please?â
âOh, right. One sec.â Walter grinned again as he skipped off, disappearing this time into the office. Moments later a harried and stressed looking Linc appeared, his cell phone glued to his ear as his eyes swept over her. He mouthed a silent apology as he continued to speak into the phone, his words clipped and angry.
âDamnit, Logan, we went to school together. Youâve known me since the goddamn second grade. You seriously canât persuade your boss to let this lie?â
Lynette watched Linc scowl and his hand clench tightly on the phone as he ran his other hand exasperatedly through his hair. âFine. But donât call me for box seats to the Knicks games anymore. Youâre dead to me.â
With that, he hung up his cell phone and for a moment seriously looked as though he were going to hurl it to the floor just to watch it shatter into a million pieces. Instead he took a deep, soothing breath, slipped the phone into his pocket, and turned to face her.
âIâm sorry.â He tried to smile, but it was still sharp and bitter around the edges. âThings have been a little crazy lately.â
âI can imagine.â She walked over to meet him as he skirted the counter, holding out her arms to envelop him in a hug. He went straight to her, the pleasure of holding her again easing the worst of his anger.
âI missed you.â He sighed, pulling away so he could kiss her, not even waiting for her to respond. âDid you miss me?â
âMore than I wanted to,â she joked, enjoying the feel of his lips on hers. âIâm sorry Iâve been so busy.â
He laughed then, resting his forehead against hers and shutting his eyes. âYou have no idea, Lynette. No idea just how bad itâs been here.â
âWhy donât you tell me all about it over lunch?â
He kissed her again and pulled away, forcing a smile on his face. âIâm starving. I donât think Iâve eaten since yesterday.â
âLinc, thatâs awful,â she lamented, hooking her arm through his and leading the way towards the hotelâs sushi restaurant. âYou need to take better care of yourself.â
âWhat I need is another vacation.â He shook his head as he held open the restaurant door for her.
